DialogDevil

Ever find yourself doing a lot of repetitive jobs in Windows, and find yourself growing hot under the collar as the screen nags at you endlessly?

Don't you just hate it when Windows continually pops up the same message dialog over and over, ad nauseum? I sure do. Now you don't have to live with it anymore - get DialogDevil.

At first I was actually just a bit concerned about the concept behind DialogDevil. Did I really want things to be done automatically for me? The answer is a resounding "Yes." DialogDevil will save you time while still leaving you in complete control.

DialogDevil is very easy to use. You just have to jump in there and give it a try, and you'll find out what I mean.

I'm the kind of person whose preferred method of updating html pages is by good old notepad (or more precisely a great freeware program called "metapad" as I've mentioned before).

Programmers love to change things, and change them right down to the nitty-gritty. You have to really, if you want to get anything done. Quite often I want to change a file extension, and Windows always gripes about it: "If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable."

Yes, I know. I don't really want to see this message over and over. But there is no way to turn it off, so I just had to endure it. I knew I wanted to start with this message. I changed a file extension, and there popped up the familiar message. Urgh! This time I started up DialogDevil. I just "dragged and dropped" the little target icon from DialogDevil over to the Yes button in Windows dialog box, and DialogDevil popped up some options. It told me I could choose to click "&Yes" and even let me set a delay. I guess I could have chosen "&No" but that would have been just silly.

(In case you're wondering why it's "&Yes" -- the ampersand in front of the Y simply means that keying in a "Y" would accomplish the same thing as clicking the Yes button.)

I quickly had some other great ideas for ways to use DialogDevil. What if I wanted to always save copies of my graphics files in a special directory? All I had to do was open up Photoshop, click on the "Save a Copy" file option, and wait for the Windows dialog box to appear.

This time I set up DialogDevil to type a string in automatically for me. Windows waited patiently for me to fill in my filename. Instead of a filename, I typed in C:\backup-graphics. Then I dragged and dropped the little target icon over the editbox where I had typed. I set a delay of 1 second just for fun. All right! Next time I opted to "Save a Copy" from Photoshop, DialogDevil typed in the directory name for me. Very cool.

I just thought of another use while I was writing this review. I use the "insert text from file" for my signature line for various applications. Now I can set DialogDevil to automatically enter the name of my signature file, so I don't have to look for it. Yay!

I saved the best example for last. Yesterday I found myself using Wordpad for some reason. It happens sometimes -- I'm not sure how. I was editing some html file, so it had to be saved in plain text. But I was pasting formatted text from MS Word, and every time I went to save it, the screen beeped at me, and said, "You are about to save the document in a Text-Only format, which will remove all formatting. Are you sure you want to do this?"

I was getting really annoyed, and then I remembered DialogDevil. I was so happy. I set it up to click Yes for me with no time delay. The next time it did it, the dialog box cleared itself, and I went about my merry way.

DialogDevil can save a lot of time and frustration. I really appreciate it, and I expect you will too.
